Deron Williams will not sign extension. Otis make your move.

News came out today that Deron Williams will not sign an extension with the New Jersey Nets.

Deron will not be signing the extension,” Jeff Schwartz told The Record this afternoon. “Based on the new rules it doesn’t make any sense for him to sign the extension. It has nothing to do with how much he likes New Jersey. Because of the rules, he’s going to play the season out and probably opt out of his deal.”

Reports have been going around for a while that the Nets weren’t going to be able to keep Williams after this season and this is icing on the cake.  This is yet another sign that Williams doesn’t want to be a part of the Nets organization and never did.

I’m sure by now the Nets have gauged his interest level as well.  Prokhorov won’t want to watch Deron Williams walk away at the end of the year leaving the Nets with nothing in return.  They gave up too much in the trade for Williams to let that happen.  So this is Otis’s big opportunity to put a superstar alongside Dwight Howard and convince him to stay.  Howard has long made it obvious that he won’t stay in Orlando without an improved roster and this is just the splash to do that.

The big question though, does Orlando have the pieces to get Williams?  If Williams openly tells management in New Jersey that he wants to play with Dwight in Orlando or he’ll just become a Free Agent and sign with another team he could have some leverage.  And, the Magic might have a chance.  Otis could offer a package including Redick, Nelson, Bass and a 1st round pick for Deron Williams and a filler.  But, again, the only way that package would be good enough is if Deron pulls a Melo and tells the Nets he will only sign an extension with Orlando.
